Limber tail in dogs – what's behind it?
Tine HauschtingSuddenly the tail hangs limply, and your dog hardly wants to wag it anymore – a typical sign of the so-called “limber tail”.
What exactly is a water rod?
Limber tail syndrome , also known as water tail, is an inflammation of the tail muscles. It often occurs after overexertion, swimming in cold water, or wet weather.
Typical symptoms:
- Tail hanging limply, usually right at the base
- Problems sitting down or standing up
- Sensitivity upon touching the tail area
- Less enjoyment of playing and waving
Treatment and prevention:
- 🛑 Rest : No roughhousing or sports – the tail needs rest.
- 🌡️ Warmth : Dry thoroughly after walks and avoid drafts.
- 👩 Veterinary check-up : If the symptoms do not improve or are very severe.
In many cases, the tail recovers after a few days. However, it is important to observe the dog closely during this time and avoid strain.
Prevention made easy:
Especially during the cold, wet season, you should make sure to dry your dog after playing in the rain or swimming. This not only protects against limber tail but also supports their overall well-being.
