Tick bite in dogs: What to do now
Summertime = tick time!
Anyone who goes outside with their dog knows the problem: Ticks lurk everywhere, in tall grass, meadows, or forests. While a tick bite is usually harmless, it can be dangerous. Here's what to do now, including a natural tick protection tip!
1. Keep calm & remove the tick correctly
Have you found a tick?
Then the rule is: react quickly – but calmly!
Here's how to proceed:
- Use tick tweezers or tick card
- Apply close to the skin
- Pull the tick straight out , do not twist or squeeze
❗ Important: Do not use oil, glue or household remedies – these can cause the tick to release pathogens.
2. Observe the bite site
Even after removal, you should keep an eye on the skin. Pay attention to:
- Redness, swelling or oozing
- Fever, loss of appetite or lethargy in your dog
These could be signs of diseases such as Lyme disease or anaplasmosis .
If in doubt: consult a veterinarian!
3. When to see a vet?
If the bite site becomes inflamed or your dog's behavior changes, don't hesitate.
Early diagnosis = better chances of recovery!
